Rates remained unchanged; USCA has not at this time been able to resolve their management problems to even offer insurance coverage. As soon as the Certificates and waivers are received by SCP members will be notified and forms posted to the web site. Presentation: Larry Reed provided a great slide show and discussion about his paddle of Florida’s Big Bend. Paddles are being planned and scheduled for the coming month and leaders are requested to announce the trips on the club calendar. Annual Picnic on the 9th of June at Ballard Park was a great success, everyone having a good time, good food, and a first-time poker run up to the dam. Many thanks to Jeanne Henninger, Judi Craig, and Monique & Steve Moore for their hard work on the all the details for the picnic and poker run. Space Coast Paddler’s Meeting Minutes, May16, 2012
The meeting was called to order at 6:35 pm; newcomers and guests were welcomed. Minutes of the March meeting were approved; there was no meeting in April. The Treasurer provided the financial report. Paddles: During the last two months the club had trips to Sebastian River, North Thousand Islands, Turkey Creek and three trips to Blue Cypress; there were good turn outs for all. Discussion: Clarifying paddle difficulty, distance and special circumstances were discussed in an effort to provide better safety especially for novices. Not everyone can paddle 20 miles, against the wind, and in the rain; not that most even want to do that. There are those who have not been paddling long enough or have enough strength or experience to successfully complete a paddle safely. Trip leaders and paddlers need to be aware of limitations – for whatever reasons – and trip leaders should not hesitate to decline participation by those who may not be up to the challenges of that particular paddle or circumstance. Likewise, paddlers should not take any rejection personally; the club will use those rejections to offer additional training or other suitable paddles. All agreed that the idea is to have fun and paddle safely. Annual Picnic will be on the 9th of June at Ballard Park. Publicized as a pot-luck, bring- a dish activity for non-members and a ‘for fun’ poker run, some paddling and a lot of fun for everyone. Scheduled for 9 AM, and fire up the grills around noon. Jeanne Henninger, Judi Craig and Monique Moore have been working on the all the details for the picnic and poker run. Future Events: Ron Thorstad of Titusville proposed partnering next spring to host a fund-raising kayaking opportunity for a non-profit organization. Members appreciated Ron’s ideas and showed support for his proposal. Further details will be worked out by a joint advisory committee and progress periodically reported. April Meeting was converted into a dinner at San Remo’s for all who wanted to attend. Really good turnout (there was food) and everyone had a good time. June Meeting: Special presentation by Matt Keene Matt Keene will be discussing long-distance paddling in the state of Florida, specifically the logistics, benefits, and planning that goes into overnight and extended kayak trips. Matt will draw on over 2,000 expedition miles that have taken place in Florida, on rivers such as the St Johns and Ocklawaha, and his status as the first thru-paddler of the Circumnavigational Trail. He will also be discussing efforts to promote and protect Florida's paddling destinations, particularly focusing on the efforts of the Florida Paddling Trails Association. This will be an exceptional presentation that everyone will greatly appreciate. Next Regularly scheduled SCP meeting, June 20th. Check the SCP web site regularly for updates and trip information.
